Description
Around Buren and Rijswijk you will find a rural environment that is perfect for a nice bike ride. Enjoy the view of vast farmland, fruit orchards that blossom in spring and the Lek that meanders through the landscape.
From shore to shore
From Buren you set course for Rijswijk where you cross the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal at a lock. Along the way you will see nothing but beautiful green areas where you can relax. From Rijkswijk you cross the Lek with a ferry to Wijk bij Duurstede. There was already a Roman settlement on this spot in Roman times. In the early Middle Ages, Wijk bij Duurstede had grown into an important trading city, but that prosperity soon came to a halt. Around 1300 Wijk bij Duurstede received city rights and a little later a city wall was built. You will still find many castles and other beautiful sights from this time. Then you cross the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal again and further on you take another ferry to the other side of the Lek.
Oranjestad Neighbors
When you've eaten your fill, it's time to explore Buren again. This Oranjestad has ties with the Oranges and Princess Beatrix and King Willem-Alexander his Countess and Count van Buren. While in town, you can check out the Orange Museum if you want to learn more about these ties to the city.
