Description
The Heerlijkheid Mariënwaerdt forms the backdrop for this beautiful walking tour. You walk a bit along the Linge and then you explore the estate. Here you can enjoy the Betuwe at its best with extensive meadows, fruit trees and beautiful views of the rivers.
The former abbey
At the start of the route you immediately pass the former abbey Mariënwaerdt. This Norbertine abbey was founded here in the early 12th century. The monastery was set on fire and robbed by gangs several times. The monastery was rebuilt again and again, until a fire in 1493 completely reduced the complex to ashes. The wealth of the monastery also declined rapidly around that time. The current house on this site was built in the 18th century on the remains of one of the abbey's old buildings. The accompanying estate used to belong to the abbey, but nowadays it is a private property that is open to the public.

Windmill De Vrijheid
You will find Molen De Vrijheid on the edge of Beesd. This mill was built here in the 19th century. The exact year of construction is not known, but indications indicate that the mill must have been built before 1826. The mill has stood still for a long time, but since 2009 the mill has been running regularly again. You can visit the mill every Saturday.
