Description
The Nijkerkernauw is a border lake that is located between Gelderland and Flevoland. During this trip you cycle along the banks of this lake in both provinces. Along the way you can enjoy the oasis of peace that prevails in this green environment.
Randmeer forests
The starting point of this route is in the middle of the Randmeer forests. From here you cycle a bit through the woods and then you cycle along the edge of the Nijkerkernauw to the bridge that takes you from Flevoland to Gelderland. Then it's time to explore the other bank of the Nijkerkernauw. You then drive through the open landscape full of meadows and polders to Nijkerk.
From Zuiderzee to Nijkerkernauw
Nijkerk used to be on the Zuiderzee, but that has changed completely with the construction of the Afsluitdijk and the reclamation of Flevoland. You will still find a beach north of Nijkerk that dates from this time. The last part of the route takes you back to the Randmeerbossen in Flevoland.
Steam pumping station Hertog Reijnout
A little outside Spakenburg you will find the steam pumping station Hertog Reijnout and the Arkemheen visitor center. Pay a visit to this visitor center if you want to learn more about the reclamation of the Arkemheen polder. The steam pumping station is still regularly used to show visitors how such a pumping station works. That is a nice experience to experience.
