Around Alkmaar you will find a wetland area full of reclaimed land on one side and an extensive dune area along the coast on the other. You start the route at Café Restaurant Genot van Grootschermer, which is located on the water of the Eilandspolder. From the terrace you have a view over the polder. From here you cycle through the Eilandspolder nature reserve and the surrounding polders to Heiloo. You cycle on dikes along ditches and other waterways. You will come across several windmills along the way. From Heiloo you cycle on to Alkmaar, which is of course known for the cheese market, but the monumental buildings and canals are also beautiful. In Grootschemer you can visit the Museum and Sculpture Garden Nic Jonk, where you will find beautiful statues, paintings and glass works of art.
