Description
A large part of this route takes you along the banks of the Linge. You cycle through several ancient villages that originated here long ago on the levees along the river. You will also cycle past fruit orchards and through vast agricultural areas.
Historic Beast
The town of Asperen is the starting point of this route. From here you set course for Beesd along the course of the Linge. The noble Pieck family had a lot of power in this village for a long time. Until the 17th century they owned, among other things, three castles in Beesd. These castles have completely disappeared, but numerous drawings and paintings of the castles have been preserved. Be sure to take the time to look around Beesd, because part of the village has a protected village view.
Enjoying the peace and quiet
The second part of the route takes you through the quiet agricultural areas north of the Linge. You cycle along the edge of Leerdam and then you cycle back to the starting point of the route in Asperen.
The old town of Asperen
The history of the town is definitely worth it. There was probably already a settlement on this site in Roman times called Caspingium. Several Roman finds have been made here. Around the year 1314, Asperen received city rights. You will find, among other things, an old fortress in Asperen that was part of the Dutch Waterline. This fort has been open to the public since 1984.
