Description
South Beveland is an old polder area that is strongly influenced by the sea. Over the centuries, land here has regularly been swallowed by the water and other areas have been reclaimed from the water by reclamation. Get to know this special polder landscape with this cycling route and get a breath of fresh air along the coast.
A battle between man and sea
The first part of this route takes you along the water of National Park Oosterschelde and along the Veerse Meer. Enjoy the salty sea air here and take in the beautiful view over the water. You then cycle via Wolphaartsdijk to's Gravenpolder through the polders. In the 13th century, this area consisted of several islands and salt marshes surrounded by water. Over the centuries, more and more land has been reclaimed and this is how the current Zeeland island of Zuid-Beveland was created. Along the way you will see the remains of this battle between man and sea in the form of springs and creeks.

Today only the mill hull is still standing, because the rest of the mill has burned down. A bit further on the route you cycle past the Nooit Gedacht mill from 1872. This mill was used until the early 1970s.
