The church village of Sint Joost and the town of Montfort are located in a narrow piece of Limburg that is sandwiched by Germany and Belgium. This route takes you across the Rozendaal Estate, which is located exactly between the two towns.
Beautiful forests
Sint Joost is the starting point of this route. The first part of the route runs straight through the church village and then you walk into the green nature of the Rozendaal Estate. This estate flows seamlessly into the surrounding Schrevenhof and Reigersbroek estates. Together the estates form a beautiful forest area with here and there pieces of open landscape with meadows. All year round you can spot prey birds here, such as the buzzard, the kestrel, the hawk and various types of owls, and this area is also popular among songbirds. Early in the morning and late in the evening, deer, foxes, badgers and wild boars are sometimes seen at the forest edge of this area. In short, there is plenty to see.
Walking and cycling terrace't Heukske
You walk via the estate in the direction of Montfort and then back to Sint Joost. End the day at walking and cycling terrace't Heukske with a well-deserved meal and a drink. From this break spot you can also follow route 136180 by bike.
The history of Rozendaal Estate
Rozendaal estate once belonged to Montfort Castle. The names of the farms on this estate still refer to this history and the old cultural landscape with monumental farms, centuries-old fields and meadows that are intersected by unpaved paths and avenues with trees also dates from this time. From the 17th century to the 19th century the area was used for peat extraction and after that it was used as an agricultural area for a long time.
