From Montferland you can cycle across the German border in no time. This way you can enjoy wooded hills and the German town of Emmerich am Rhein within one route. The best of both worlds! You will soon pass your first sight: an authentic hail cross. According to old Catholic custom, such a cross was supposed to ward off evil spirits, so that the crops were not damaged by hail. In Zeddam you pass the Volharding, a flour mill from 1891. You drive through the wooded hills into Germany. Further on you drive through the Emmericher Ward, one of the few remaining natural forests on the Rhine. Back in the Netherlands you drive through the rural area to Terborg, a picturesque village on the Oude IJssel.
