Description
The Rothaarsteig is also called the'path of the senses\\\'. This route takes you over a distance of 154 kilometers from Brilon to Dillenburg through the Sauerland, Wittgensteiner Land and Siegerland. You walk over the ridge of the Rothaargebirge to the foot of the Westerwald.
Springing rivers
The scenery of this route consists of steep rock formations, babbling brooks, meadows full of wild herbs and flowers and extensive deciduous and pine forests. Furthermore, many rivers originate in this area. You walk along the source of the Ruhr, the source of the Sieg and the source area of the Lahn. The path takes you to viewpoints with the most beautiful views and to ancient half-timbered towns and picturesque places such as the old Hanseatic city of Brilon.
From peak to peak
Other towns that are worth a visit are Dillenburg with the Wilhemsturm and the Berleburg castle. The 290 million year old Bruchhauser Steine is the highlight of this route from a natural history point of view. You can also learn more about the consequences of Hurricane Kyrill in 2007 in this area at the Kyrill-Pfad Schanze. Walk on narrow platforms through an uncleared piece of forest and get to know the destructive power of nature.
