A tour of the Vinkeveense Plassen

In and around Abcoude it is wonderful to cycle. You will find plenty of cultural history, nature reserve De Botshol and surprisingly much peace.

Picturesque Abcoude
It takes a while before your bike ride really gets going, because you will probably walk the first few hundred meters. The reason: the beautiful historical center of Abcoude. You will see plenty of monuments here, such as the fifteenth-century Gothic village church. The Wilhelmina bridge over the Gein is also beautiful. This kwakel (pedestrian bridge) dates from 1908.

Millionaire Mile
In Baambrugge too, you will stumble over national monuments, so to speak. On the Dorpsstraat, you will see many eighteenth-century buildings. The Baambrugse Zuwe is also more striking. This hamlet consists of one road: the former development axis that runs straight through the Vinkeveense Plassen. Thanks to the marinas and villas, this road has the nickname the Millionaire Mile.

Fort near Abcoude
The Fort bij Abcoude was the first fortress built for the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Construction began in 1884. The intention was to make the buildings of brick, but that plan was immediately thrown in the trash after the invention of the high explosive grenade: an explosive that brick was no match for. Concrete was used instead of brick, after which the fort was completed in 1887. Remarkably enough, this fort was never put into military use. Fortunately, it has been preserved; you can visit the almost completely intact fort in the summer months.
