Cycling through the countryside of Leeuwarden

South of Leeuwarden you will find an ancient part of Friesland with classic terp villages and vast agricultural areas with many farms. Get on your bike and enjoy the peace and space in this region.

Rentier homes
From B & B Theetuin Gauwe Krakeling you drive along the canal into the polders. After a while you drive through the protected villagescape of Mantgum. You can enjoy a characteristic atmosphere here, thanks in part to the old Maria Church. Many rentiers settled here in the nineteenth century. They built beautiful monumental buildings and associated parks. You can also admire a medieval church in Roordahuizum: the Vincentius Church.

Westergo
In the polders you will immediately notice the vastness and tranquility. This region was once called Westergo: until the thirteenth century, this region was separated from the rest of Friesland by the Middelzee. Grouw is a beautiful old town on the Pikmeer, one of the Frisian Lakes. You can admire, among other things, the Romanesque thirteenth-century St. Peter's Church. Further afield are some of those beautiful old villages. What a special region!
