A beautiful day in Drenthe

Cycling is wonderful in Drenthe. You will find special nature reserves, authentic esvillages and a lot of cultural history. This route takes you through the surroundings of the esdorp Beilen.

Camp Westerbork
After a few kilometers you will pass through Boswachterij Hooghalen. This area also includes the Heuvingerzand, a small sloping drifting sand area with old oaks and Scots pines. A little further on you drive past the Camp Westerbork Memorial Center. The former camp site is now a green plain, the old commander's house is one of the few remaining buildings. At junction 58 there is a fourteen meter high observation tower. A beautiful place to admire the surroundings from above.

Dwingelderveld
Dwingelderveld National Park is a unique nature reserve of mixed forests, sand drifts and wet heathland. It is wonderful to step off at the edge of the large heathland and experience that silence that is so rare in the Netherlands. A peace that is at most disturbed if the herd of Drenthe heath sheep happens to pass by. Back in Beilen you can relax further at Het Zwaantje Eetcafé Bar with a drink and a delicious meal.
