Get a breath of fresh air on Walcheren

The western tip of Walcheren is a popular cycling and walking area. And not without reason: in the polder and on the coast you will find beautiful beaches, dunes, Landgoed Duinbeek and attractive villages such as Domburg.

The Mantle
Between Domburg and Oostkapelle you drive a bit through De Manteling. This beautiful nature reserve is rich in old country estates of the former Middelburg elite. From the seventeenth to the nineteenth century they spent their summers here. Hardly anywhere else in Europe do deciduous trees grow so close to the coast as here. But with a price: many trees are no higher than one meter. Their wings are clipped by the cutting westerly wind and the drifting salt.

Westkapelle High
In the old cozy seaside resort of Domburg you can see some beautiful monumental buildings. On the Markt you can see the former town hall from 1567 and the fifteenth-century church. In Westkapelle you will pass the highest lighthouse in the village. This almost 50 meter high tower from 1470 originally served as a church tower. In 1817 a light was set up, in 1831 the accompanying church burned down.

Estate Duinbeek
The history of Landgoed Duinbeek goes back to at least 1350. What was once a fortress to defend against the Vikings, developed into a hunting lodge that was bought in 1567 by none other than King Philip II of Spain. The Geuzen did not like this: they leveled the country estate in 1572. The current Duinbeek dates from 1715. It is a beautiful mansion with a characteristic tower and park-like garden.
