Description

In the vicinity of Wilnis you walk through a landscape that still bears the traces of the Middle Ages. A nice bonus: in this beautiful wide landscape you experience the tranquility of the Green Heart.

Demmerik
You walk through a few hamlets, such as Donkereind and Demmerik. The name is a corruption of Denemarc and probably refers to the descendants of Danish Vikings who retreated to this area in the eleventh century. As you walk through Demmerik, you can see from the long and cross-house farms that the hamlet still looks like an old peat village. You also walk past the Veenmolen, a flour mill from 1823.

Bijleveld
You also walk along the Bijleveld, a wide canal that was dug into the peat with great difficulty in 1413. Horses once walked along the towpath here to move barges across the water. The path can be swampy, so make sure you wear waterproof shoes.
