West Friesland consists of numerous agricultural areas, but you will also find many rugged, wet nature reserves with forests, meadows and lots of water. Along the way you will probably encounter all kinds of birds that live in this wet area and you can also enjoy the peace and quiet here.
Enkhuizen in the VOC period
The town of Wervershoof on the IJsselmeer is the starting point of this route. From here you cycle through the extensive polders to the IJsselmeer coast near Schellinkhout. Then you cycle along the IJsselmeer all the way to Enkhuizen. This city was an important trading city during the time of the VOC due to its strategic location on the IJsselmeer and this is still reflected in Enkhuizen. The city center full of historic buildings and the defense tower at the harbor of Enkhuizen are still reminders of these prosperous times. Be amazed as you cycle through the center of Enkhuizen and then head back towards Wervershoof along the many ditches and other waters in the interior of West Friesland.

Mill De Hoop
In Wervershoof you can take a look at Molen De Hoop from 1889. There was previously a mill here that was replaced by Molen De Hoop, because the old mill did not have enough storage capacity. Grain was ground in the mill and electricity has been generated since 1955. The mill has been restored several times to keep it milling. Even today the mill still runs regularly.
