Description
Near the Belgian border you will find a beautiful part of Zeeland. This area is isolated from the rest of the Netherlands by the Western Scheldt and you will find an open meadow landscape with polders, meandering creeks and special nature reserves with numerous bird species.
Towns along the border with Belgium
The starting point of this route is just outside Sluis. From here you cycle along the Belgian border in the direction of the walled village of Retranchement. This village is a remnant of a large set of fortifications intended to protect the banks of the Zwin. At the hamlet of Terhofstede you continue cycling in the direction of Slikkenburg and Nieuwvliet.
End in Tasteful Sluis
The second part of the route takes you back to Sluis via Aardenburg. This old fortified town is known for its friendly Burgundian atmosphere and the rich history of Sluis is also worth seeing. View beautiful old buildings or visit one of the nice shops in the center of Sluis.
The Zuidzandse Mill
In Zuidzande you can admire the Zuidzandse Mill on the Sluissedijk. This mill was built in 1874 and was used extensively until 1968. The mill came to a standstill due to storm damage. The mill was not restored until 1981 and in 1996 the mill was restored again. Nowadays the mill runs on a voluntary basis. It is possible to visit the mill by appointment.
