Description
The area around the Zeeland town of Oostburg consists of a marine clay landscape with a patchwork of polders. Most of the polders here are used for arable farming. You will also find numerous nature reserves that are part of Het Zeeuwse Landschap.
Cycling along the Waterdunen
The starting point of this route is in Oostburg. At the beginning of the route you will pass the water tower of this city. This water tower was built between 1948 and 1950 to store water. Currently, the tower is no longer used for water storage, but as a residence. You then cycle further to the coast through the vast inland of Zeeland. On the coast you cycle through Breskens and along the Waterdunen, where the coast is heavily fortified to protect the land against the sea. The Waterdunen are a beautiful area full of salt marshes and mud flats that have been formed by the sea. Here you can see how much influence the sea can have on the landscape. You then cycle through the interior to Oostburg.
