Your route starts at Pannenkoekenboerderij Brinkzicht, in the middle of the Drentsche Aa National Landscape. A natural archaeological monument, this last remaining intact stream valley landscape in the Netherlands. There are as many as 800 different plant species - more than half of the total of 1,400 species in the Netherlands. The Gastersche Diep is one of the branches of the Drensche Aa. Until the early seventeenth century, there was a ford near Gasteren, a ford that was part of a historic trade route. As a kind of tribute, a fore was constructed nearby with field boulders, which serves as a fish ladder. You cross the water via a small bridge called'Aolstalbat\\\\\\\\\\\\'. Bat or means a small bridge, often without a handrail. It is located close to a 'aolstal', a structure for catching fish.
