Description

The Lauwersmeer National Park is a lush nature reserve on the border of Groningen and Friesland. If you are a bird lover, you can indulge yourself here. This area is very popular with all kinds of birds. But even if you're just looking for a nice place to cycle, you're in the right place here. The starting point of this cycling tour is just outside Zoutkamp on the Reitdiep, the channeled lower reaches of the Hunze. From here you cycle into the Lauwersmeer National Park to make a circle around the Lauwersmeer. The landscape in this area consists of extensive grassland, reed beds and deciduous forests around the lake. While cycling you can look out over the shallow Lauwersmeer. In early spring orioles, avocets and spoonbills settle here to spend the summer and in winter you will find thousands of geese here.
