Vilsteren Estate

. Ask ten random people what an estate is and nine will answer that it is something with a large house or castle. Sometimes people will also talk about the garden around it or the accompanying park, but that is probably where it ends. However, an estate is much more. An estate is precisely about the coherence of the various functions. The management of the estate is aimed at maintaining the whole, developing it further and transferring it to the next generation.

. The buildings, forests, natural areas, farms, etc. form a landscape, cultural-historical and economic unit, with components that generate money and components that cost money. For the preservation of the estate with all its values, it is of course important that income and expenditure are in balance.

. Landgoed Vilsteren meets the aforementioned description of an estate for 100%. At the moment the estate is approx. 1,062 hectares in size. Of this, approx. 416 hectares are agricultural land (mostly leased to farmers), approx. 541 hectares are forest and nature reserve and the rest consists of the village, roads, water features, the Gasunie complex etc.

It is a private family estate housed in a BV. The director-steward is responsible for the management. The starting point here is the policy as established by the shareholders in the policy plan.

Restaurant Expo Madrid is a very original and fun destination because it houses a unique copy of Rembrandt's masterpiece 'The Night Watch' in its original size of 3.90 x 4.80 metres.

The story goes that neighbour Jan van der Horst once made some paintings on a painting course that he was very pleased with, but his wife said that as long as he had not yet painted 'The Night Watch' he should not get so big on himself....... and that had quite the consequences!

. He painted the Night Watch so lifelike that some admire this version even more than the original. In any case, the result now hangs in a special room at Expo Madrid where the restaurant gives a presentation with explanation .... you don't even get that in the Rijksmuseum!

Nature reserve Lemelerberg consists of a moraine located west of the Overijssel Lemele and northeast of Lemelerveld. The part called Lemelerberg is over 60 meters high. At 77.9 m, the Archemerberg located on the north side of the area is the highest part of the moraine.

Listening stone Liberation Route Europe in Den Ham is a boulder with an information panel in three languages. Owners of a smartphone can use the Liberation Route Europe app to get more information and listen to the three-minute radio play about the drama that took place there just before the end of World War II.

Steep Bank

This high bank originates from the last ice age when the meltwater had to find a way between the moraines of the Archemer and Besthemenerberg. Here, on the border with the Eerde estate, Baron van Pallandt made part of his estate available to the Indian theosophist Krishnamurti. He held the strong camps on inner liberation and world reform there between 1924 and 1939. The small open-air theatre near the 18-metre-high lookout tower is located on the old site of the campfire. During WWII, the grounds were set up as Camp Erika; a small monument commemorates the victims.
