Description
It is wonderful to walk in the woods near Exloo and Odoorn. Take some provisions for the road, because you will not encounter any catering facilities along the way.
Boswachterij Exloo
From this beautiful village you can walk straight into Boswachterij Exloo. Coniferous and deciduous trees and heathlands alternate in this rolling landscape. The deeper you walk into the forest, the more everyday life seems to disappear behind you. This is a good environment to enjoy the silence and to clear your head completely.
Blood Mountain of Exloo
If you cross the Borgerderweg, you enter Boswachterij Odoorn. This forest was created in 1914 as a job creation project. In 1934 the Pools Hoogte was erected, an artificial hill of thirteen meters high with a watchtower on top. Initially, the workers had to do this with shovels and wheelbarrows. A journalist called the hill the Blood Mountain of Exloo, because the workers got blood blisters on their hands.
