Description

You start this route at the Achelse Kluis, a Trappist abbey. In 1656, a border chapel was built nearby. Catholics from the Protestant Netherlands were allowed to hold their religious services here, just across the border. Take a break at Wandel & Fietscafe Peerkesbosch, a pleasant spot in the middle of the Weerterbos nature reserve. The nature reserve consists of a beautiful mix of moist and dry forests, grassland plots and small heathlands. You cycle back through Budel-Dorplein, named after the Dor family of manufacturers. A zinc factory was built in the middle of the Loozerheide in 1892, and the Dors had houses and facilities built for the workers in the area. The area is a protected village view. The buildings are located between the coniferous forests, a beautiful picture. The zinc basins are now closed and are being developed as the Cranendonck Sustainable Industrial Park.
