Description

The picturesque village of Ruinen is often called the gateway to the impressive Dwingelderveld National Park for good reason. This nature reserve, which at almost 4000 hectares is the largest contiguous wet heathland in Western Europe, offers a unique cycling experience. This cycling route through the Dwingelderveld takes you through this beautiful landscape where various flocks of sheep graze the area in a natural way. You imagine yourself in the middle of a picturesque setting of vast heathlands, dense forests, glistening fens, marshy areas and drifting sand plains. One of the highlights of the route is the sheepfold near Ruinen where you can see how the shepherd and his sheep contribute to the preservation of this special nature. From the lookout tower you have a panoramic view over the heathland which, especially in the summer months when the heathland is in bloom, provides an unforgettable image. The route also takes you through the lively village of Dwingeloo, which is known for its historic village green, charming farms and the striking green spire of the St. Nicholas Church. Here you can take a break and enjoy a drink on one of the cozy terraces. Near Dwingeloo you will pass the famous Radio Telescope, one of the oldest radio telescopes in the world, which not only adds a bit of history but also a touch of science to your tour. With this Cycle Route through the Dwingelderveld you will not only discover the rich nature but also the charm of authentic Drenthe villages. It is a varied route full of natural beauty, culture and cozy meeting places, ideal for cyclists who are looking for a unique and unforgettable day in nature.
