On the border of Drenthe, Friesland and Overijssel lies the area of the former Colonies of Benevolence. In 1818 Johannes van den Bosch founded the first agricultural colony, Frederiksoord. Here poor families were given a new chance at a better life. They received shelter, work, care and education. Schooling played an important role in this.
