The waterways that skippers used to transport peat to the west of Friesland were already created in the 16th century.
The Turfroute is a sailing route of about 105 km long and goes along various old stories, locks and special sights. This cycle route is a shortened version of the peat route and takes you along all these points, only via the cycle path. Admire the beautiful peatlands, the museum mill and the locks on the route.
This region is not only known for its peat, but is also part of the Frisian Waterline. This line was created in the 17th century and consists of various defensive works in the form of redoubts. These were positioned at strategic locations where there was a passage between the peat. However, the redoubts date back to before the Frisian Waterline: they were already placed in the Eighty Years' War. One of these redoubts has been found in Makkinga.
