Tour of Welna and the Tongeren Estate

Your route starts at Boerderij Buitengewoon. Here you immediately walk onto Landgoed Tongeren, one of the largest private estates in the Netherlands. It still has an old, small-scale cultural landscape that has been beautifully preserved. The adjacent Welna is a family estate of almost 600 hectares of forest, heath, hills and some grasslands with a number of houses and outbuildings scattered around. The vast forests, silence and tranquility make it a unique place in the Netherlands. The estate was established in 1848 by Buys Ballot, a famous Dutch meteorologist. His meteorological research showed the relationship between wind and air pressure: Buys Ballot's Law. He was the founder of the KNMI in De Bilt, in 1854. Buys Ballot bought large tracts of land between Epe and Vierhouten where he founded estates.
