Breskens, Biervliet, IJzendijke
Breskens used to be the place where most motorists entered Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, by ferry. The alternative was to take a detour via Antwerp. Since the construction of the Westerscheldetunnel, you no longer have to embark, but don't worry: for enthusiasts, there is still a bicycle-pedestrian ferry between Vlissingen and Breskens. The Bressiaanders themselves also like to use it.
Biervliet is now a small village, but make no mistake: it had city rights in the 12th century and belonged to the German Empire. It even had two mayors and seven aldermen to govern the city. IJzendijke, just a bit bigger, belonged to the French crown at that time.
Beautiful bike route and a lovely stop at the tea garden't Gemeentehuis in Biervliet. Delicious coffee with home made apple pie.
