Giethoorn, Blokzijl, Mosquito bite
The beauty of the Weerribben extends beyond Giethoorn. Get on your bike and discover the nearby village of Muggenbeet. The village does not owe its name to the annoying stinging animals, but to the mucken beecke that runs through Muggenbeet. That is Saxon for 'small stream'. That was quickly corrupted: already at the beginning of the 14th century it was described as 'Mugghenbete
Fortunately, you will find few mosquitoes here, but this nature reserve does contain many birds, butterflies and dragonflies! Stops such as the birdwatching hut, lookout tower or observation platform are perfect points to rest and spot these birds.
Don't miss Blokzijl either, the city of the Weerribben. At the outdoor centre you can learn all about the background of this nature reserve.
During this cycle route you will get to know the Weerribben well in a short time and you can even go sailing along the way.
But don't forget that from September the ferry at Jonen will be out of service.
