Museum route through Frisian villages 35 km

Grou, Warten, Raert

We have deliberately chosen not to make this museum route through Frisian villages too long, so that you have enough time to explore all those special museums. The route starts in Grou, a characteristic water sports village in the municipality of Leeuwarden. Here you will immediately find the first museum; Hert fan Fryslan, a must if you want to learn more about the history of this region. But the Museum Bescherming Bevolking, where you can look into an old command post, is also worth it.

Through typical Frisian landscape, green wide views and lots of waters you cycle from village to village. Past Nauwe Galle, before Warten, the next museum is on the route. The Mineralogical Museum, where you can admire display cases full of mineral stones, gemstones and even fluorescent minerals. This museum is only open in the summer months, so check whether you can go there. In Warten, at the Wartenster Wild, you will find the next museum. This time the history of this picturesque village on the water is central. The village is the gateway to National Park De Alde Faenen and tells the story of survival with, on, by and in the water.

Warga, is also a village that falls under the municipality of Leeuwarden. It does not really have a museum, but this village that originated on a mound, does have a protected village view and 17 national monuments. One of them is Roordastate, which is right on this route.

Via Reduzum, also no museum, but a clay studio, you cycle to Rauwerd, Raerd in Frisian. Raerd has a motorcycle museum, where the extensive and special private collection of the Miedema family can be admired.

On your return to Grou, you will not only have visited a number of impressive museums, but you will also have gotten to know the typical Frisian villages in this region a little better. And let's be honest; that is a very nice discovery?!
