Description

Groningen, Zuidhorn, Sebaldeburen

Today you will explore the province of Groningen by bike. The Central Station in Groningen is a convenient place to start your route through the northern province. First cycle towards the surprising Stadspark Groningen, a place where the people of Groningen relax and enjoy nature or sports activities. There are cycle paths through the park, so you can cruise through the park at your leisure.

Through the typical green Groningen meadow landscape you cycle into the wide world. Every now and then you cycle into a lovely quaint village centre with a school, a church and some old houses, to continue your route through the green world. Until you come across another nice little village. This is unwinding at its best. You cycle on to Grootegast. In this nice ribbon village, which originated in the Middle Ages on a wide sand ridge, you will find a museum square with no fewer than three museums. You can visit all three. In each museum you will be busy for about an hour. But you can also choose from the LEGiO Museum, the Victory Museum or the Museumdrukkerij. Grootegast has an idyllic white church, which is more than worth it. The original church dates from the end of the sixteenth century. The church is a national monument and stood there quietly for years for the Protestant community of Grootegast-Sebaldeburen, until Grootegast became world news in 1929. Four police officers were murdered by IJe Wijkstra from Grootegast, because they had come to pick up Aaltje van der Tuin for a court case. Aaltje had moved in with IJe and had abandoned her six children. When she refused to go, IJe shot the officers dead and cut her throat. One of the murdered police officers, Mient van der Molen, is buried at the church. When you cycle out of Grootegast, you will see a steel plaque with a poem by Willem Tjebbe Oostenbrink along the Caspar Roblesdijk - at the intersection with De Noord. The poem is called"Over laand en licht\\\". It was written in West-Groningen, on the occasion of the completion of the land consolidation in this area in February 2015. You continue along the Hoendiep in the direction of Zuidhorn, where you can find another poem by the poet.

On the other side of this fifteen kilometre long canal you have a view of the Zwakkenburger Molen. Past Zuidhorn, before Aduard, you drive along a mini-island with the Anna Borema Lookout Tower. From the tower you have a beautiful view of the nature reserve't Stort, fields, meadows and the Hoendiep or Starkenborgh Canal. After the lookout tower you head, still along the canal, towards the vibrant and lively capital of the province.
