Voorne-Putten is the South Holland double island between the Haringvliet, the Spui, the Oude Maas and the Brielse Meer. Two of the most important places on this double island are Spijkenisse and Hellevoetsluis. And this cycle route just happens to visit both.

Spijkenisse is located on the banks of the Oude Maas. It was a modest village until the middle of the twentieth century, until it started to function as a growth center and overflow city of big brother Rotterdam. The farming and fishing village grew explosively to become the largest place on Voorne-Putten. The city clearly has an old and a new center, but also has a rich culture. For example, various cultural events are organized annually.

On this route you will find a number of stops to get to know Spijkenisse better. A tour boat leaves from the Oude Gemaal in Spijkenisse, allowing you to explore the city from the water.

Hellevoetsluis is a fortified town on the other side of the island of Voorne-Putten. It was an important naval port for the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. When the Silver Fleet was captured from the Spanish by the Dutch admiral Piet Hein in 1629, it was disembarked in the port of Hellevoetsluis. Various buildings in the town are reminders of that time. Such as the Tromphuys, the gun carriage shed and the Ruyterhuys. The town also has a nationally protected cityscape. In Hellevoetsluis we also selected a number of stops to experience the town.
