Sommelsdijk is a village in the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee , in the Netherlands province South Holland , located on the island of the same name Goeree-Overflakkee. Previously, it was the only village on the island that was part of the province of Zeeland . In 1805, Sommelsdijk became Hollands (later South Hollands ), and remained so after the constitutional amendment of 1814. On 1 January 2023, Sommelsdijk had 7,320 inhabitants, making it the second largest village in Goeree-Overflakkee (after Middelharnis). The village has grown together with Middelharnis . Until 1966, Sommelsdijk formed a separate municipality, after which it became part of the municipality of Middelharnis and now of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee. During the Second World War, almost 200 young men from Sommelsdijk were interned in Camp Schoorl for a month in early March 1941 for insulting the German army and the Dutch police.
