Operation Market Garden is probably the most famous battle of the Second World War. The Battle of Arnhem, from 17 to 26 September 1944, was the final chapter of it.
Due to a combination of bad luck and coincidence, the Allies did not succeed in capturing the Rhine Bridge in Arnhem, which you cycle over during this route. When it turned out that Market Garden had failed, many paratroopers were on the wrong side of the Rhine. Mainly due to the efforts of Polish paratroopers under the command of General Sosabowski, some 2,400 paratroopers managed to escape at the Westerbouwing.
Finally, in May 1945, Germany's capitulation was signed in Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen. The Airborne Museum Hartentien, the former British headquarters, tells the whole story together with the information centre about the Battle of Arnhem, Airborne at the Bridge.
Beautiful route with great historical value. Beautiful monuments at junction 27 and at the underpass of the A50. The route through Arnhem requires some attention because of the traffic. From 39 to 26 you have to go via 38. That is not on the route map.
