The Fort Sint-Andries route is versatile and leads over dikes and cycle paths through the small-scale and varied landscape on the border of the Bommelerwaard. You pass beautiful nature reserves, the characteristic Fort Sint-Andries, the old fishing village of Heerewaarden and other lovely villages.
Fort Sint-Andries is a former military fort between the Maas and Waal rivers near Heerewaarden . The fort is also called Fort Oud Sint Andries to distinguish it from the younger Nieuw Sint Andries, located further west . It was built during the Siege of Zaltbommel (1599) by Andreas , Cardinal of Austria, on behalf of Francesco de Mendoza . [1] Andreas was assisted during the construction by his brother, the Margrave of Burgau, and Duke Maurice of Saxony.
