Winterswijk Achterwooldsepad

Klompenpads are only found in the provinces of Utrecht and Gelderland and go as much as possible over farmland, which is why dogs are often not allowed. Walking over klompenpads means walking over farmyards, along fields, babbling brooks, meadows, forests, often over places that are otherwise inaccessible. Behind Winterswijk, against the German border, there is a very beautiful one: the Achterwooldse Klompenpad. Winterswijk ticks a few walking boxes anyway: Wandelgemeente 2020 and National landscape since 2015. The magnificent coulisse landscape is hardly intersected by waterways, highways or other cutting events, and is dotted with farmhouses with ox-red gable signs, traditionally belonging to impressive Scholten farms.

You can start at the Brommels cheese farm (where you can also buy a EUR 2 flyer with illustrated explanations) or at the Keunenhuis of famous chef Nel Schellekens. You walk through the hamlet of Woold, near the stream the Boven Slinge. Along the way you will pass centuries-old trees, ash trees, and also clay pits, where bricks used to be extracted. In addition to nature, there is also culture and history, for example you walk along the old Bocholtsebaan, the old (now demolished) railway to Germany. Want to see the photogenic Bekendelle watermill? Then take a detour.
