From here, you can walk to the German border and the Brachter Wald forest. The forest gets closer as you walk. At De Witte Steen, a white stone used to mark the border, hence the name. Now it's a green border crossing, closed to cars. Wonderfully peaceful! On the other side of the border, you'll find the Brachter Wald forest. Until the mid-1990s, the British Army operated the largest ammunition depot in Western Europe in this area. After the military left, it became a protected nature reserve. Motorized traffic is prohibited in the area. Nature has been able to run its course undisturbed here for years, which is why you'll find so much wildlife. You'll walk past heathlands and pine forests—wonderful!
