Description
This route takes you through the Duurswold region of Groningen. This region is located on a ridge of boulder clay and cover sand. The landscape you cycle through consists of nature reserves with swamp forests, grasslands and reedlands, agricultural lands and here and there a ribbon village. Discover the north of Groningen with this beautiful route.
Tetjehorn nature reserve and the Schildmeer
The starting point of this route is the village of Termunterzijl on the edge of the Eems estuary. From here you cycle to Wagenborgen, Siddeburen and Schildwolde. These villages each have a long history. For example, there used to be a monastery near Schildwolde, but nothing remains of it. Then you cycle further to the Schildmeer and the Tetjehorn nature reserve on the edge of the lake. The meadows of Tetjehorn are used by various farmers as an area to graze their cattle and this area also consists of marshland. In addition to cows, you will find various bird species in this area, such as ducks and geese.
Water tower
Between Delfzijl and Termunterzijl you cycle past the Delfzijl water tower. This round water tower is made entirely of metal and the tower is 30 meters high. In short, you can see this high tower from far and wide. At the top of the tower there is a large water reservoir where water can be stored. This water tower was built here in 1965.
