Medemblik is a beautiful historic city in West Friesland. Around the city you can enjoy a quiet Dutch landscape with polders, bulb fields and small cozy villages such as Opperdoes, Wervershoof and Onderdijk.
Polders, bulb fields and picturesque villages
The starting point of this route is right in the historic center of Medemblik. This city is the oldest city in West Friesland and that is reflected in all the historical sights you will find here. In the harbor you can, for example, admire historic ships of the brown fleet or visit one of the museums in Medemblik. From here you walk along the IJsselmeer coast to Onderdijk and then to Wervershoof. In the spring you cycle near Wervershoof past flower bulb fields in the most beautiful colors. You then cycle on to Opperdoes. This village is sometimes called'Little Giethoorn\\\' because of all the bridges over the water that form the passage to farms and houses. It is just a little less busy here than in Giethoorn.
Eatery De Babbelaar
At the end of the route you will return to Medemblik. There you can go to Eetcafé de Babbelaar for a nice cup of coffee, lunch or dinner. From here you can also follow route 489314 to further explore the area.
Museums in Medemblik
Spending a few hours in Medemblik shouldn't be a problem at all. There is a lot to see here. For example, take a look at the historic Radboud Castle from the 13th century or learn how to make traditional delicacies at the Bakery Museum. In Medemblik you will also find an old-fashioned steam pumping station and a stop for the steam tram between Medemblik and Hoorn. You should really see that with your own eyes.
