Figure eight around Wijk bij Duurstede

Cycling in the area around the Lek is wonderful. Along the way you will pass beautiful castles that take you back to times long past. Enjoy the view and get a breath of fresh air during this cycling route.

Neighborhood near Duurstede
This route starts at the parking lot on the edge of Rijswijk, where you can park your car before getting on your bike. You cycle along the water to Wijk bij Duurstede, which lies at the junction of the Nederrijn and the Lek. The city has a long history: from a flourishing trading city to a bishop's city and from a fortified city to a commuter town. Wijk bij Duurstede is a pleasant city with beautiful countryside.

Mill De Hoop
At the start of the route you cycle past the windmill De Hoop. This mill was built in the first half of the 18th century as a replacement for an old mill on the floodplains of the Lek. Over the centuries the mill was restored several times. In 2003 the mill was restored for the last time and nowadays the mill is still kept running on a voluntary basis.

Castles Route
On the route you can visit no less than three castles. The first castle you will encounter is Hindersteijn Castle, which was built in the year 1300. Then you will pass Sterkenburg Castle, which was built here around 1196. You can walk freely through the beautiful garden. The last castle you will pass is Beverweerd Castle, a 13th-century castle on an island along the Kromme Rijn.
