Description

Your route starts at PAND Pannenkoek Restaurant & Ijssalon. In the Schalkwijk area you can explore part of the New Dutch Waterline. You will also see the remains of Schalkwijk Castle, on the edge of the town of Schalkwijk. An imposing castle was built here in the 13th century. Nowadays you will find a walking park with canals around it and a garden complex where the castle used to stand. The Grijpestijn castle used to stand near the Lek River. From the 14th century to the 18th century, the castle was in the hands of different owners, but not everyone was equally careful with the property. On the site of the castle you will now find the Grijpestein farm. The moat of the castle has remained partially intact.
