You will find Medemblik in the middle of the vast polders of West Friesland. This is the oldest city in West Friesland and you can see that in all the special sights you will find there. This walk takes you through the beautiful streets of Medemblik, but also through the quiet outskirts of the city and along the IJsselmeer coast.
Old and modern side by side
You walk to the edge of the IJsselmeer. Medemblik received city rights in 1289 as the first place in West Friesland. In the 13th century, Count Floris V had a forced castle built there. This castle is now known as Radboud Castle. You can still admire this castle in Medemblik and that is just one of the many remnants of the past in this city. You will also find modern ports in Medemblik where brand new yachts and historic ships from the brown fleet lie brotherly next to each other.
Picturesque Opperdoes
Opperdoes is a small village near Medemblik. This village dates back to the 11th century and it is sometimes called Klein-Giethoorn because of all the bridges over the water that you will find here. Fortunately, it is a lot less touristy here than in Giethoorn, so you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings undisturbed. Furthermore, the village is now known for the Opperdoezer Ronde, a special kind of potato that is grown here.
