Genk, Flanders, Belgium
Hiking route: 4710151
Provided by: Wandelroutes Routiq België
The route starts and ends at the Thorpark, behind the former mine of Waterschei, and is part of the Hoge Kempen National Park. Here you will find everything the Hoge Kempen has to offer: mine spoil heaps amidst heathland and pine forests, a beautiful stream valley, juniper berries and inland dunes.
Stone men point the way to the top of the slag heaps, and along the way you will encounter even more large and small stone men. The highlight of the walk is a magnificent view over the Hoge Kempen National Park.
The slag heaps of Waterschei and the Klaverberg area are a protected landscape and nature reserve, with a link to recreation. This makes it ideal for hikers who want to enjoy both.
