Our Lady's Basilica Route

Zichem is a sub-municipality of the city of Scherpenheuvel-Zichem in the province of Flemish Brabant and the starting point of this walking route. The route is fully signposted with walking junctions.

From the Sint-Eustachiuskerk Zichem you walk through a small park to the Maagdentoren, a fortified tower from the 14th century, 26 meters high, the tower has been given a modern facade on the collapsed part where you have a wide view over the Demer valley via a viewing platform.

You walk along the Demer via the Oude Demer stream over numerous bridges and pass the De Demerbroeken nature reserve.

Halfway along the route you will reach the Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel, a perfect place for a break. Here you can catch your breath, enjoy a refreshing drink, and take in the serene atmosphere. After this resting point you continue your walk through the picturesque meadows, which eventually lead you back to Zichem.
