Description
Zichem is a sub-municipality of the city of Scherpenheuvel-Zichem in the province of Flemish Brabant and the starting point of this walking route. The route is fully signposted with hiking junctions.
From the St. Eustachius Church Zichem you walk through a small park to the Maiden Tower, a fortified tower from the 14th century of 26 meters high. The tower has been given a modern facade on the collapsed part where you have a wide view over the city via a viewing platform. Demer Valley.
Via the Oude Demer stream over numerous bridges you walk along the Demer and pass the Demerbroeken nature reserve.
Halfway along the route you reach the Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel, a perfect place for a break. Here you can catch your breath, enjoy a refreshing drink, and absorb the serene atmosphere. After this rest point you continue your walk through the picturesque meadows, which eventually lead you back to Zichem.
