This route over centuries-old church paths through the Eilandspolder starts in De Rijp. In the Golden Age this was a prosperous village thanks to herring fishing, whaling, trade and shipbuilding. It is still one of the most beautiful villages in North Holland.
Then you walk into the polder, where chattering meadow birds break the silence.
Eilandspolder is the historic, green heart of the Land van Leeghwater, wedged between the Beemster and Schermer reclaimed lands. Villages in this area are Graft, de Rijp, Oost- and Westgraftdijk, Noordeinde, Grootschermer, Driehuizen and Schermerhorn.
Long ago, this polder was an island located between large lakes such as the Schermer and the Beemster.
The Eilandspolder is a paradise for nature lovers. Discover it for yourself with this brisk walk!
NB:
Parts of the route are not accessible during the breeding season from March 15 to June 15.
