The Volmolen
Nowadays the Volmolen is a grain mill, but in the past it was used for "fulling" fabrics.
OLD CRAFT
Fulling (or felting) is an old technique for processing wool.
In the past, fulling mills were used for this. Fulling improves the quality of woven woolen fabric. The substance was placed in large oak tubs, which were filled with a mixture of full earth (a type of clay), linseed oil, rancid butter, urine and water. Pestlers, powered by the water power of the Geul, flattened the fabric. Fourteen hours later the wool sheets were felty, rougher and stronger.
