Delfzijl, Blue City

This route leads from Delfzijl, along the industrial area of Delfzijl (14% of the total chemical industry in the Netherlands) to the Oosterhoek. A region where centuries-old villages have had to make way for advancing industry. We pass successively, according to Weiwerd, Heveskes, where there is still a church from the 12th century and where the northern dolmen was found. We then pass a sea wall with gravestones, as a memorial to the village of Oterdum. We then arrive at the fishing village of Termunterzijl with its monumental lock. The past is upheld through the fish restaurants. After the village of Termunten with its monumental church we cycle towards Fiemel. Here we see another bunker complex from the Second World War (anti-aircraft guns to protect Emden). Here we are also at the Dollard viewpoint, where we can see seals and other salt marsh animals. We can also see Germany on the other side of the Ems.
