Description

Arnhem is actually located incorrectly on the map: Westervoort is in the east, North Brabant in the south and Oosterbeek in the west (and the Zuiderzee used to be in the north). Perhaps that is why the city is so full of contradictions: a city with medieval buildings and ultra-modern architecture, a city full of tranquility in the many parks and full of activity as the capital of the province, a city on the low bank of the Rhine and high hills of the Veluwe. In short: a city with something for everyone.

This place played an important role in the Second World War: the Hartenstein hotel (now the Airborne Museum) housed the headquarters of the British First Airborne Division; the church served as a dressing station for the Allied troops. The Airborne March is held annually on the first Saturday in September as a reminder of the Battle of Arnhem.

The modern station building has its pros and cons, but it is undoubtedly a huge eye-catcher. On the outskirts of Arnhem you can see the place where the wealthy citizens of Arnhem used to have their houses built. Much of it was lost during the war and has now been replaced by quirky new construction. Fortunately, a number of very beautiful buildings have survived history.

From the bustling city center you can cycle in no time in the beautiful parks, where you can relax. You discover that Arnhem has a lot of greenery. Outside the city you also notice how rolling the landscape is. You reach the highest point past the Dutch Open Air Museum and Burgers Zoo.

The route also takes you to Doorwerth. In the floodplains of the Rhine you will find Doorwerth Castle, the oldest part of which dates back to the thirteenth century. The oldest Robinia in our country is located in the courtyard. This tree was planted in 1579. Despite severe damage from shellfire, the tree has stood the test of time. Actually just like the city of Arnhem!

NB!

Along the way you will come across two bicycle ferries. Do you cycle the route when the ferries are not sailing? Then cycle around at Renkum via junctions 02-20-06-81-Lexkesveer-95-50-76 (or vice versa from the other direction, the Lexkesveer sails daily all year round). At Driel, follow from junction 59-27-87-86-29-22-35 (or vice versa if you cycle in the other direction.)
