Cycling route along the IJssel

Zwolle, Kampen,'s Heerenbroek

The IJssel is 125 kilometers long and winds its way between Westervoort and Kampen. The width is less easy to measure: at high tide the water also flows into the floodplains and the river can easily double in size. Sometime between the year 600 and the early Middle Ages, the IJssel was connected to the Rhine and therefore became an important river. No wonder that you will find a number of Hanseatic cities on the banks of the river.

We start in medieval Zwolle, take a look at the Zwolse Balletshuis, or cycle past the smallest house in Zwolle. If you have a little longer time, Museum de Fundatie is a great time to get off.

The next Hanseatic city on the route is on the other side of the IJssel; Hattem, you cycle through the outskirts of Hattem past the monument for the fallen in April 1945. Over the Geldersedijk you continue the route towards the third and last Hanseatic city on this route; Struggling. Here too we selected a few nice places to get off, such as the Koornmarktspoort or the old mills. You will get to know these special cities well during this route along the IJssel.
