Forest & Peat route

South of Rijssen you will take a wonderfully varied walk. First you walk through Overtoom-Middelveen, a small-scale nature reserve that forms a connection between the Sallandse Heuvelrug and the Borkeld. Here you will find vast and wet grasslands where orchids and Parnassia bloom, as well as buttercups, dandelions and clover. Meadow and water birds feel right at home here, so bring binoculars if you want to spot them. Part of the route takes you over unpaved roads. They are straight and have names such as Legakker and Veendijk: a clear reminder of the period when peat was cut here. In between you will also come across the Brekelsveld. The former heathland has made way for dense forests here. Ideal if you want to unwind for a while. The route ends at Buiteninn Het Overveen.
